MAEGAKI - Preface By John Viol Shihan

In response to a great many requests and extremely persistent encouragement from some of my Instructors, students and friends, I would like to share some of the experiences of my 3 terms of service as an Uchi Deshi in Japan.

To answer the countless questions about what a term of service means, I need to explain that a true, classical Sogo Budo / Bujutsu Dojo functions as a Warrior collective. The backbone of the Warrior collective is the Uchi Deshi system which is based on 3 levels of service to the Dojo. Each level is considered to be a term of service.

  1. Dai Ichi - 1st level. Primary focus is on the physical Dojo.
  2. Dai Ni -  2nd level. Primary focus is on the student membership.
  3. Dai San - 3rd level. Primary focus is on the Instructional Staff.

One of the most often asked questions about my terms of service were regarding how long I stayed in Japan. The answer is anywhere from 6 months to 2 years straight. There was no specified length for a term. You advanced when you were deemed ready to take on the next level with its corresponding responsibilities.

For our organization, being an Uchi Deshi is an integral part of our training so I thought I was following the same path that everyone else was. I did not know that being an Uchi Deshi was rare until many years into the program.

In my opinion, the Uchi Deshi system is the only way for true Budo / Bujutsu Densho to continue. Perhaps I can contribute to the preservation of an essential Warrior system by sharing with others the notes from the Journal I kept during my terms of Uchi Deshi service presented on the following pages.
