WEAPONRY ANATOMY
There are 5 systematized Weapons of Buki Jutsu / Kobudo which include the Rokushaku Bo (6 foot staff), Tonfa (handle), Nunchaku (flail), Sai (truncheon) and Kama (scythe). Most Buki Jutsu/Kobudo weapons were originally believed to be everyday tools or farming implements that were converted into practical and effective self-defense Weapons.
It must be clear that Buki Jutsu / Kobudo and empty-handed Martial Arts mutually enhance each other. A thorough knowledge in both can only serve to greatly improve one's overall understanding of the Martial Arts. All Buki Jutsu / Kobudo Weapons must be thought of as extensions of the human extremities and not as separate objects. Weapon techniques are based on empty-handed movements and empty-hand techniques are based on weapon movements. There is still much debate on whether it is best to learn empty-hand techniques first and then apply them to the weapon or to learn the weapon first and then incorporate the movements into empty-hand techniques. To the Sogo Budo practitioner at the Sei Shin Kan it does not matter since both methods are studied and applied equally.

The exact origin of the Bo (also called Kon in Okinawa) is not clear. This is due to the fact that Bo techniques were practiced and developed in secrecy. One popular theory widely accepted by modern day practitioners is that the Bo originated from the Tenbin which was a stick held across the shoulders for carrying buckets of food, water and other items. The standard Bo is usually made of Oak and the standard size is currently 6 feet in length called Rokushaku Bo. The most common Bo type today is round with tapered ends. Other types include round non-tapered, octagonal and square |

The exact origin of the Sai is not clear. This is due to the fact that Sai techniques were practiced and developed in secrecy. The best accounts, from the highest ranking masters of Kobudo, trace the origins of the Sai back to a short sword carried by dignitaries in ancient times which eventually evolved to the unsharpened truncheon we know it as today. |

Due to the obvious characteristics of the Kama, it easily made the transition from a tool used for work into a tool that could also be used for protection. |
